Master Yagi Meitetsu has just returned from Canada where he led seminars on traditional Meibukan Gojyu-Ryu. This year, he was accompanied by his son, Yagi Ippei Sensei, who is the two time All-Okinawa Karate-Do Association’s kumite champion. Ippei Sensei shared some of his winning kumite secrets to the Canadian participants. The seminars series were sponsored by the Canadian Meibukan Gojyu-Ryu Association and were held in Toronto, Kingston, Markham, Whitby, Orillia, and London Ontario. The mix of modern and traditional was Canadian first in these seminars.
Master Yagi covered advanced kata in detail along with the important philosophy of Meibukan. Kata that was covered in detail included Geki Sai 1, Geki Sai 2, Saifa, Shisochin, Sanseru, Seisan, Seienchin, Seipai, and Kururunfa. Ippei Sensei shared his expertise on kumite that was ideal for full contact, point, and self-defense. His repertoire included kicking drills, foot work, and sparring combinations. This was the first visit to Canada by Ippei Sensei and the father and son combination made this year’s seminar series uniquely symbolic. We hope that this is only the first of many such Meibukan workshops.
World Karate Tournament
Okinawa will be hosting its 3rd World Tournament in Okinawa this August. Master Yagi is on the seminar board and is also leading a seminar on Okinawa Goju-Ryu for the Okinawa Goju-Ryu Association. This association is Okinawa’s oldest Gojyu-Ryu union and is known as the Okinawa Gojyu-Kai. Its membership has included such Gojyu-Ryu pioneers as Yagi Meitoku Dai Sensei, Higa Seiko Sensei, and Shinjo Masunobo Sensei.
If you are in Okinawa between August 13 and 16, please try to attend the event as a participant or spectator.
