Imagine learning Karate during the 1950’s when Okinawa Goju-Ryu was becoming established. Sensei Anthony Mirakian is one of the few privileged westerners to have trained during this time with two true masters of Goju-Ryu. He initially began learning Goju-Ryu with Seikichi Toguchi of Shoreikan. He would later be introduced to Dai Sensei and be a part of America’s Karate history.
He would return to America with a 3rd dan from Dai Sensei and a representative of the overseas branch. He opened his dojo in 1960 and is America’s father of Okinawa Goju-Ryu. In 1990 he was awarded Ku-Dan, Hanshi. He remains the first and only westerner to have achieved such an official status with Okinawa Goju-Ryu.
Mirakian Sensei reports that training was arduous during post-war Okinawa and promotes that his classes as a pure and true art reminiscent of the old days at the Meibukan Hombu Dojo under Dai Sensei. Mirakian Sensei still actively teaches Meibukan and has students in Canada and the Netherlands.
